The Bridge is a clear example of "up cycling" where I incorporated the preexisting bridge structure with a functional and modern approach to building design. By using materials such as glass and second hand sand stone I was able to create a harmonious learning and creative environment with boundless opportunities for innovation -
The Library is a glass Dome shaped building that allows for a 360 degree view of the African landscape - beautiful and boundless. I purposefully chose the over use of glass material to accentuate the idea of incorporating nature throughout the building, bringing the external environment indoors. The Library should serve as the main social and academical "hub"- this is where the transparent walls and hallways connecting to other building will nurture a balanced ecosystem.
By incorporating a continues "mezzanine" level throughout the Office block, I opened up closed spaces to create one continues studio where student and teacher interaction is promoted while maintaining closed off areas for privacy. The deans office takes the top floor as it looks over the entire landscape, with monumental glass windows opening up to the outside life.
The layout for my folly is directly derived from the Palladio: Villa Rodunda. access from all four sides via staircases while the main structure of the folly id derived from my perspective sketches. I repeated the use of recycles sandstone bricks while maintaining a modern touch by incorporating my moving texture.
This is where the majority of lectures and tutorials will take place as it hold the main Theater. This space was designed with a glass wall and roof to reflect the two other buildings. This then ties the three separate structures together creating the ideal cultural, social and educational environment.
The Bridge arches were inspired by the Villa Rotunda
